Alfred James Burgar (1910-1974)
Alfred James was a Sergeant in the Essex Regiment and served in North Africa. The Guardian Newspaper, Jan 20 1941, page 8, which states:
Details have now been issued of deeds of gallantry and daring for which a number of awards were announced in the London Gazette of November 29. Included in this list was :
No 6008270 Sergeant Alfred James Burgar, the Essex Regiment, got the Military Medal for action at Adarded, Italian North Africa. His platoon was under heavy fire within two hundred yards of the enemy. The Officer commanding was badly wounded, but gave orders for a withdrawal. After withdrawing Burgar returned alone to remove the wounded officer who was lying in the open. Although under heavy fire at short range he bound up the officer's wound but was unable to move him. He remained until the officer died and then removing maps, badges etc. returned to his platoon.
