Matching School Log Book

 

E/ML 175/1  This log book was started in about 1876, and gives details of the children, weather and other village topics.

 

25/9/1876                W Saville flogged

11/7/1877                William Stone expelled

30/6/1878                E. Radley leaves school for service.

30/9/1878                Admitted Mary Judd, Rose Brewer,

26/5/1879                Admitted Charles Peacock.

21/6/1880               Sent Mary A. and Sarah A. Perring, George Cook and George Peacock home for school money.

2/11/1880               G. Peacock sent home for school pence.

15/11/1880             G. Peacock sent home for school pence.   He returned with it.

2/1/1885                 Prizes:  Charles Peacock 1/-  and Emily Peacock 1/-.

20/6/1887               Admitted Arthur Peacock.

28/7/1887               Mary Peacock sent home ill.

12/12/1887             W. Peacock present after  absence of eight weeks (fever?).

28/6/1888               Thomas Peacock left the school without leave at 10.45.

29/6/1888               Flogged Thomas Peacock.

30/7/1888                Admitted Mary A. Stone and William Peacock.

31/7/1888                Admitted Clara Peacock.

22/11/1889                W. Peacock was taken ill at school.  I sent him home and cancelled his attendance.

1/4/1890                 Punished William Peacock for attempting to run away from school.

9/5/1890                 William Peacock came in school late this morning and was marked absent.

2/6/1890                 Admitted Johnny Peacock.

11/6/1890                Mary Peacock came to say that her brother was ill with measles.

12/6/1890                Rev. F.P.H. Powell visited this school.   Wrote to Mr. Bell re William Peacock of `                          Matching Tye.

17/6/1890                William Peacock brought to school by his uncle.

23/6/1890                Admitted Alice Peacock.

10/7/1890                Sent four boys to W. Peacock to school in the afternoon.

5/8/1890                 William Peacock came in late and was marked absent.

16/12/1890                A pair of gloves stolen from A.? Peacock.   Unable to find out who took them.

2/1/1891.                Removed A. Peacock & others to St. I.

8/1/1892.                Illness so absent.  C. Peacock and others, 14 total, chiefly mumps.

22/1/1892.                Following cases of illness reported, including John and Arthur Peacock.

1/2/1892.                First day of School Year. No. present 83.  No. absent 9. Including William Peacock illness.

10/2/1892.                W. Peacock absent through illness.

11/8/1892.              Visit of Mr. Street, Attendance Officer.   Called his attention to the attendance of W. Peacock and F. Judd.    G. Shoat immediately after gave evidence that Peacock was playing truant that day.

12/8/1892.              W. Peacock present in the morning only.    After School hours Mrs. James Peacock sent information that she intended sending to his mother in London on the following Monday.

26/10/1892.                Sent notice to Attendance Officer with respect to W. Peacock’s absence.  

2/11/1892.                School attendance officer paid a visit to the school to enquire about W. Peacock.

3/11/1892.                W. Peacock returned to school.

9/1/1893.                Admitted four children from Matching Green who have come to reside at Newmans End (Little).

21/2/1893.                Mrs. J. Peacock sent note to say W. Peacock had very bad hand.

2/3/1893.                Attendance Officer visited.    Reported names of W. Peacock.

18/5/1893.                Admitted Annie Peacock (Infant).

1/11/1893.                Day very cold.   Fires in both rooms.  

30/11/1893.            Sent note to School Attendance Officer from Mrs. James Peacock.   Her ward W. Peacock going to work.

8/12/1893.              Boys teasing Charles Pratt.   Punished as a caution had been issued generally a short time ago includes F. Judd, W. Peacock and H. Curtis, etc.

3/4/1894.                Prizes distributed including Ar. Peacock.

13/4/1894.              Arthur Peacock away for a week picking stones.

 

10/10/1894.            School attendance officer visited.   Attention called to William Peacock and G. Shoat.

26/11/1894.                School attendance officer attention called to W. Peacock and others.

24/5/1895.                Admitted E. Peacock Infants on Monday.

22/11/1895.                Clara Peacock absent (Mother confined).

17/4/1896.                Four children admitted this week.   J. Little and C. Peacock required at home.

1/5/1896.                C. Peacock will not attend again having passed her standard.

15/5/1896.                E. Peacock ill.

 

28.10.1896.                Twenty eight sent home, 2 Peacock girls, other child had measles.

23.10.1896.                Admitted two  Little boys 

20.5.1897                J. Peacock applied for permission to leave, gave the same reply as to W. Pratt.

               (W. Pratt had brought Bible with birthdays entered – not considered trustworthy, so no permission to leave school.  Eventually found to be correct.)

24.5.1897.                W. Pratt, J. Peacock, R. Hockley absent.

8.10.1897.                School closed at 3.05 p.m.  Room required for public business.

22.10.1897.                E. Peacock ill.

3.10.1898.                The Crouchmans kept at home, their cousin E. Little ill with scarletina.

5.10.1898.                School attendance officer visited.  Called attention to A. Peacock and others.

23.10.1898.                Three Crouchmans returned after three weeks absence, Quarantine for Scarlet Febver.

3.1.1899. Daniel W. Judd taken to doctor suffering from eczema.

6.1.1899. Mary Saville at home part of the week, Mother ill.
