Foreword
I have written my Memoirs to tell my Grandchildren and great-grandchildren what it was like in the early part of the twentieth century.
I would like you to have a copy each, so that you can then tell your children about me and Bill and the rest of my family.
I hope that you all enjoy reading this story as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
Much love to you all,
Nanny.
Note from Bill:
For younger readers who have grown up in the age of decimal coinage, here is a quick explanation of the currency terms used by Lil.
4 farthings make one penny
12 pennies ('d') make one shilling and 240 pennies make one pound ('£')
20 shillings ('s') make one pound ('£')
Tuppence means 2d
You could get a lot for a penny, for example, a loaf of bread. The pound then would buy about 200 loaves whereas today it will only buy 2 loaves.
