Evidence about the Symbister Estate 67
Mr Hosack presided over a Court held in the school-room to hear applications from the Symbister estate. The Assessors were Messrs Mundell and Ferrier; clerk, Mr Morgan. Mr W. Balfour, solicitor, Edinburgh, appeared for the crofters, and made an opening statement, which was replied to by Mr Anderson, for the proprietor. Mr W. A. Bruce was also present. The statements of the following seven crofters were taken:—Alex. Shewan, Scatness; Magnus Flaws, do.; James Burgess, South Scousburgh; Malcolm, do.; Alex. Robertson, do.; Robert Henderson, do.; and Thomas Mouat, North do. There was nothing specially noteworthy about the evidence. The rise of rent since 1855 was stated to be 30 per cent.
The Commissioners drove back to Levenwick about 6 p.m.
