THE CROFTERS COMMISSIONERS’
DECISIONS 68
The Crofters Commissioners have now given their decisions in most of the cases which came before them in Shetland this year. So far as they have gone, the reductions are much the same as those made in other crofting counties in Scotland. Up to Friday about 1229 fair rent decisions had been issued, and although it is scarcely possible as yet to give the total results accurately, it may be stated in round figures that the present rents in these cases amounted to the sum of £6207, which the Commissioners have cut down £4509. This is equal to 27 per cent., and it may be mentioned in the connection that the reduction made over Orkney last year amounted to 30 per cent., while in Western Highlands, in a total of 3518 cases, the reduction was also 30 per cent. The arrears in the Shetland cases decided amounted approximately, to £6399, of which £3818 -- equal to 59 per cent -- has been cancelled. In Orkney, 44 per cent. of the arrears were cancelled.
The heaviest reduction on a large estate has been made on Symbister, the old rent of which was about £1129, while the fair rents are now about £776 -- a reduction of 31 per cent. The arrears on this estate amounted to about £802, of which £605 -- or 75 per cent -- has been cancelled.
A few days earlier the individual cases were finalised and published in the Shetland News. The results of the decisions for the Burgess family are shown below.
