William Peacock was born in 1882 in London.14

The register of Births at the Workhouse of St Pancras states:

William, illegitimate son of Eliza Peacock, was born 20th October 1982

He was baptised in the St Pancras Church 279:

William Peacock, son of Eliza Peacock was born on 20th September 1882 and was baptised on 5th October 1882

A second Baptism Register for St Pancras, Middlesex, 279 states:

William, son of Eliza Peacock, of the Workhouse, was baptised 4/10/1882

The workhouse Register states the Eliza was admitted as 'lying in' on the 18th September, 1882. She and William were discharged on 30th October 1882 and 'passed to Epping'.

He was the illegitimate son of Eliza Peacock, and was brought up by his Uncle James and Aunt Matilda.  He appears with them in the 1891 and 1901 Census returns.

See 1891 and 1901 Censuses

His childhood was somewhat turbulent.  He was often absent from school and was a source of trouble to his Uncle and Aunt. The schools at that time were require to write daily reports on anything relevant to school life.  Thus admission of pupils and the date of leaving were recorded;  the effect of illness and bad weather; Children with fleas being sent home because other pupils would not sit near them; absence of children working on the farms; prizes given for good attainment;  the topics are endless.

We have abstracted items relevant to the Peacock family and relations.  This abstract is therefore only a small portion of the Log Book.

William Peacock & Mabel Seymour of High Laver Sep 1903

(Although there are three dates in the entries, only the month is given here).

They were married in 1903 in St Mary the Virgin, Matching, Essex.222,251 The Marriage Register for St Mary the Virgin, Matching, Essex, has the entry:

Fathers: James Peacock deceased and Bran Seymour, Farmer.

James Peacock was not William's father, but his Uncle.  However, since he had been brought up by James and Matilda, he would have considered them to be his parents.

Obviously, William learnt something at school because he was able to sign his name, something most of his ancestors were incapable of doing.

William died in 1945 and was buried in 1945 in All Saints, High Laver, Essex.257 In High Laver churchyard is a tombstone inscribed as follows:

IN LOVING MEMORY

See Photo of William with wife Mabel and children taken in about 1919.
