The Marriage of Edwin Burgar and Harriet Blanksby on 1st August 1853.
The item below was taken from the Marriage Register of the Parish Church of Sheffield.
Persons marrying would always sign the Church Marriage Reister. As can be seen Edwin signs his surname as Burgar. However, the Vicar persists in calling him Burgan (or maybe Burgon).
In the GRO marriage Certificate below it is clear that the Vicar has completed the Certificate and signed Edwin's name. He is under the impression that the surname is Burgon.
It would seem that in some of these early Certificates, the persons marrying did not necessarily sign the Certificate themselves.
