He enlisted for the Army in the First World War. 111 He was was a Rifleman in the 9th Kings Royal Rifle Brigade.

He was killed in action on 25 Sep 1915 at Ypres Belgium.16

He is recorded in the Commonwealth Graves Commission website and in the National Roll of the Great War. There is also a letter sent to his parents telling them of his death.
He has no known grave, but his name is on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres,
Belgium. He is listed on Panel No. 48 Burgar J.W, Rifleman between
the names Burfett L.R and Burge E.E.

In the Menin Gate register it is said that he had no next of kin, but obviously that is
incorrect.
In fact his parents received the above letter from his platoon sergeant describing the
action in which he died.
