Alfred Burgar is a direct ancestors of Bill Burgar, the author of this work.

He was born in 1839 in St Lukes, Old Street, London.16 Civil Registration of Births reference is Sep 1839 Vol 2 p 249. - St Lukes, Old Street, London16

The Baptism Register of St Mary Newington, London,87  states

Alfred William, son of Alfred and Mary Ann Burgar, fishmonger, of 3 Elizabeth street, was born on 3/2/1863 and baptised on 12th April 1863.

He died in 1917 at Chelsea, London.16 Civil Registration of Death reference is Sep 1917 V 1a p 317. Aged 78. - Chelsea, London.16

Alfred appears in the 1841-1861 Census Returns living with his parents or siblings.

See 1841-1861 Census Returns.

Alfred then married Mary Ann Wetherilt in 1861.16  Civil Registration of marriage reference is Sep 1861 V 1D p 304 - Newington Walworth London.16 The following is a summary of the Civil Marriage certificate:

On 8th September 1861, Alfred Burgar, aged 22, Bachelor and Fishmonger, of 9 Burton Street married Mary Ann Wetherilt, aged 21, Spinster of 4 Walworth Villas at St Peters Church, Walworth in the Parish of St Mary, Newington, Surrey. Alfred's father was Joseph Burgar Deceased, Shoemaker and Mary Ann's father was Richard Wetherilt Deceased, Baker. Both signed their names and the witnesses were John Francis Coe and Ann Payn.

John Francis Coe was the brother-in-law of Mary Ann Wetherilt.

At the time of the marriage Mary Ann Wetherilt had a son, George, who was approaching one year old.

See 1861 Census of Mary Ann and her son George

After the marriage they had at least 10 children, seven of whom survived.

See Tree showing descendants of Alfred

The couple then appear in the 1881 to 1891 Census with some of their children.

See 1871 to 1891 Census Returns.

Alfred appears in the ' Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper (London, England),Sunday, April 4, 1880; Issue 1950' reporting that he suffered a fall as follows:

See Newspaper report

As well as being in the 1981 Census Alfred appears in the The Register of Electors in Battersea, Polling District 4, page 267.  It states:

Alfred Burgar of 45 Henry Street, Battersea

This is the address that he was living at in the 1891 Census.

William Edwin and his sister, Esther, were baptised together in Battersea on the same day; two for the price of one? Esther's twin sister had died soon after birth.

in 1883, Alfred and Mary were living with their married son, George,  in Wellington Street Battersea. Their last child, Elizabeth Clara, was possibly named after George's wife Clara. Thus Alfred and Mary were having children 22 years after getting married! Alfred and Mary were still living with son George and his wife in 1891. Whether this was of economic necessity is unclear.

In 1891 Alfred appears in the Electoral Roll in Battersea

In the 1901 Census Alfred is not living with Mary. Stories from some of his grandchildren suggest that he was a somewhat pathetic person at this time.

In later life Mary and Alfred did not get on well and Alfred seems to have had to fend for himself. When in his seventies, he is said to have visited one of his sons and brought them some fish for dinner. He had obtained the fish from a contact from his fishmonger days, but apparently they were nearly all heads, and very little flesh. 154

It is possible that he was unable to work.

In the 1911 Census he was an inmate of the Chelsea Workhouse.

See 1911 Census.

The death was registered by Jane Trevett, Aunt, present at the death, of 33 Neate Sytreet, Camberwell. She signed with an 'X'. The registration district was Camberwell, the sub-district was St George Camberwell.

Jane Trevett was originally Jane Wetherilt, the sister of Mary Ann (Wetherlit) Burgar. It is possible that Mary Ann stayed with her sister during the birth of Jane.
