Mary Wetherilt married Alfred Burgar a few months after the Census was taken.  At the time she had a baby, George, with her.  It is thought that George was not the child of Alfred.  Grand-daughters of Mary said that there was a special relationship between Mary and her son George.  Sometime in the early 1900s Mary and George went to Kent to try to claim an inheritance, thought to be on the death of his blood father.  Apparently, ‘they were sent away with a flea in their ears’.

We believe the Mary Whithall, Mother-in-law aged 70 born in Portsmouth was really Esther (Mudford) Wetherilt.  The details in general fit the picture, she is the mother-in-law of Alfred and should have been 71 years old.     However, her baptism in Limehouse was soon after her birth so if she was born in Portsmouth she must have moved very quickly to Limehouse.
