At the time of the Census there were 124 men and 20 women prisoners. The majority of the men were labourers but a few had trades. There were 25 staff, Turnkeys, etc.
We believe that this Charles Adams is the son of James Adams, since he was a bricklayer and is about the correct age.. We have not found any details of the crime that resulted in him being in prison. Also we have not found him in subsequent Census returns so there is a possibility that he was transported to Australia, although we have found no records of this..
George Adams was the son of James Adams (1770- ), the son of William Adams. He appears with his father in the 1851 Census.
In the Reading and Oxfordshire Mercury, 4th July 1840 under the heading Berkshire Assizes is the following:
George Adams was convicted of assaulting Hannah Cotteril in Winkfield on 20th April 1840, and received a 12 month prison sentence.
