John Burgar (1868-1928) and his family in the First World War
This family can certainly be said to have done their bit for the war effort. Jack, his wife and three daughters and son Wally (Joseph Walter) are all recorded in the National Roll of the Great War.114
(Personally, I think that it is lovely that the four females in this family received national recognition for their work during the war).
See details of Wally, who died in the battle of Ypres in 1915
John Burgar (1868-1928) is
recorded as follows:
Burgar, J.F. Private, RASC114
He volunteered in May 1915 and in June of that year was sent overseas to the
Western Front. He was engaged in the transport of food supplies and served at
Loos, St Eloi, Albert, Vimy Ridge, Ploegssteert, St Quentin, Armentieres, Arras,
Bullecourt, Passchendale and Baupaume, and at Cambrai in the Advance of 1918.
He was demobilised in February 1919, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General
Service and Victory Medals.

It would seem that Jack was 47 years old when he joined up and 51 years when he was demobbed. He was present at many of the major battles that claimed the lives of millions of soldiers. Fortunately for Jack he was probably not in the front line for most of the action, possibly because of his age.
