Britain entered the First World War William on the 4th August 1914.  Frederick enlisted on the 8th August 1914, just 4 days later.  He served for one and a half years in the trenches in France.  In 1917 he was classified as unfit for military service, due to a problem that had been aggravated by by active Service111

See personal details and details of his Army career.

Frederick enlisted in 1915 into the Army.   From his prolific correspondence with the Army he seems to have been a reluctant soldier.  He had 46 days with loss of pay and presumably spent a considerable time in the the army prison. After 3 weeks in France he had a gunshot wound to the fingers of his right hand and was returned home.

He then did everything in his power to get a discharge. His ex-Colliery manager wrote to the Army asking for his release. Frederick wrote as well.  The Army were equally determined to keep him as a soldier.

Dorothy Ester Julia (Jupp) Beresford

After Frederick  separated from Rose Coburn, he seems to have formed a relationship with Dorothy Ester Julia (Jupp) Beresford.  She was the wife of a person who served with Frederick during WWI.  Her grandson Chris Coyle 291 has provided the information below.

Dorothy Ester Julia Jupp married Frank Beresford in 1911 and were living in Rotherham at that time. Frank Beresford and Frederick Riggott Burgar served in the same regiment in WWI and were awarded the same service medals. Frank Beresford was born and died in Yorkshire. He was an entertainer (Piano player) and his wife Dorothy E.J. was a singer and this took them to London and other Towns.

For some reason they separated and it would appear that she set up home with Frederick Burgar. The reason for this supposition is contained in her her Death Certificate 16 below:

Dorothy Ester Beresford, otherwise Burgar, died on the 30th July 1929 at 30 Twickenham Road, Isleworth age 38 years, of 39 Boston Park Road, Brentford, Middlesex, wife of -- Beresford, occupation unknown.  Cause of Death was Carcinoma of the Uterus and cardiac failure,  No Post Mortem.

The Informant was Frederick Burgar, causing the body to be buried, of 39 Boston Park Road, Brentford, Middlesex,

The above suggests that Dorothy was another of Frederick's partners/wives.

After the death of Dorothy, Frederick Riggot Burgar married Florence K.M. Cawthorne  in 1951 in Ealing Middlesex.16 Civil Registration of marriage reference is Mar 1951 V 5E 526 - Ealing Middlesex.16
