William Burgar was born in 1892 in Sheffield, Yorkshire.^15,16 Civil Registration of Births reference is Mar 1892 V 9c p 408 - Sheffield, Yorkshire¹⁶ William was entered in the register as William Burgar Riggott.

He later became William Riggott Burgar.

He appears in the 1901 Census with his mother and siblings.

Britain entered the First World War William on the 4th August 1914. William enlisted on the 8th August 1914, just 4 days later. He served for one and a half years in the trenches in France. In 1917 he was classified as unfit for military service, due to a problem that had been aggravated by by active Service. ¹¹¹

Prior to the war he had been a miner. At the end of the war he a relatively large pension, 22 shillings a week. Many other Burgars who were injured received a half or a quarter of this amount. This suggests that he must have had serious problems.

There is a letter which he sent to the Army, asking why he hadn't yet received his medal.
