The workhouse Register states the Eliza was admitted as 'lying in' on the
18th September, 1882. She and William were discharged on 30th October 1882
and 'passed to Epping'. He was the illegitimate son of Eliza Peacock, and was brought up by his
Uncle James and Aunt Matilda. He appears with them in the 1891 and 1901
Census returns.
See 1891 and 1901 Censuses His childhood was somewhat turbulent.
He was often absent from school and was a source of trouble to his Uncle and
Aunt. The schools at that time were require to write daily reports on anything
relevant to school life. Thus admission of pupils and the date of
leaving were recorded; the effect of illness and bad weather; Children
with fleas being sent home because other pupils would not sit near them;
absence of children working on the farms; prizes given for good attainment;
the topics are endless. We have abstracted items relevant to the Peacock
family and relations. This abstract is therefore only a small portion of
the Log Book.

James Peacock was not William's father, but his Uncle. However, since
he had been brought up by James and Matilda, he would have considered them to
be his parents.
Obviously, William learnt something at school because he was able to sign
his name, something most of his ancestors were incapable of doing. William died in 1945 and was buried in 1945 in All Saints, High Laver, Essex.257
In High Laver churchyard is a tombstone inscribed as follows: IN
