After the death of his first wife in 1868, William appears in the 1871 Census as a widower. His sister Rebecca is keeping house for him, and looking after his three surviving children. The Census enumerator seems to have been confused by the situation since William's daughter, Eliza, is listed as a sister, and his two boys, William and James, are listed as lodgers. Soon after the 1871 Census, William Peacock remarried. He and Eliza May had marriage banns published in 1872 in St Mary the Virgin, Matching, Essex.222 The Marriage Banns Register 251 for St Mary the Virgin, Matching, Essex has the following entry: William Peacock (Wid) & Eliza May of Harlow June 1872 (Although there are three dates in the entries, only the month is given here).
