Thomas Bond was baptized on 7 March 1813 in Stanstead Mountfitchet, Essex.105
The Baptism Register at Stanstead Mountfitchett states: Thomas son
of Mazey Bond Spinster Base baptised 7/3/1813 It was difficult
to read the name Mazey. It could have been Mebley. However, a few years
later Mazey had another child, and Mazey was clearly written. Both
children were base born (i.e. were illegitimate) since at the time Mazey was
a spinster.
In another Baptism Register
is the entry
Tommas son of Marther Bond Base baptised 7/3/1813
In the Bishops Transcripts (D/CR 336) 149 Masey is entered:
Thomas Bond son of Mercy Bond of Stansted, Base, Spinster was baptised 5/3/1813
Frances Bond daughter of Mercy Bond of Stansted, Base,Spinster was
baptised 13/4/1817
Often the details in the Baptism Registers are written by the Church
Warden or other official. Some of these had difficulty writing and
spelling. However, the Bishops Transcripts are often written by the
Vicar and are more clearly written. The disadvantage is that the Vicar
would often copy the Baptism Register, and if he thought that there were
errors he would correct them. In this case he has changed Mazey to Mercy. |
