James Andrew Adams is a direct ancestor of Bill Burgar, the author of this history.

James Andrew Adams was born in 1810 in Winkfield, Berkshire.¹⁰ He was baptized on 21 December 1810 in Winkfield, Berkshire.²¹¹ The Baptism Register of Winkfield Church states:

James Andrew son of James & Mary Adams was baptised on the 21/12/1810

James Andrew Adams died in 1786.  The Civil registration reference is Mar 1886, vol 1a, p 292. Aged 75. Chelsea, London.

Since he was a pauper in the Chelsea Work House in the 1881 census it is possible that he died there in 1886.

James Andrew Adams and Catherine Shelley were married on 22 December 1839 in Sunninghill, Berkshire.^16,25 Civil Registration of marriage reference is Dec 1839, Vol 6, p 529 - in Windsor, Berkshire.¹⁶  The Civil Registration Marriage Certificate states:

James Andrew Adams, Full age, Bachelor , Bricklayer, of Sunninghill married Catherine Shelley, Under age, with consent of parents, Spinster of Sunninghill on 22nd December 1839 at Parish Church, in Parish of Sunninghill, nr Windsor, Berks.
Fathers were James Adams, Bricklayer and John Shelley, Well digger.
Signed by James Andrew and Catherine.
Witnesses John Shelley and William Hibbert signed but Mary Shelley made her mark “X”.

They appear together in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses.

Catherine (Shelley) Adams died in 1854.   He and his two surviving sons were living together in 1861.

In 1871 James was living back in Winkfield, but in 1881 he was a pauper living in the Chelsea Workhouse.

James Andrew Adams and Catherine Shelley had the following children:

i.	Andrew Adams was born in 1843 in Berkshire.10 Civil Registration of Births reference is Mar 1843, Vol 6, p 177. - in Easthampstead, Berkshire16 He appears with his parents in the 1851 Census.  We have not found him in later Census returns or in the Civil Death registrations.
ii.	Thomas Adams
iii.	Julius Adams was born in 1849 in Winkfield, Berkshire.10 In the 1851 Census, he was living at 7 Hoopers Court? in Chelsea, Middlesex. 10 In the 1861 Census, he was living at 4 Regarts? Place in Chelsea, Middlesex. 11 In the 1891 Census, Julius was living at 20, Benfield Street, in Battersea, London. General Labourer14 Civil Registration of Death reference is Mar 1901, Vol 1d, p 379. Aged 52 - in Wandsworth, London.16 He died in 1901 in Wandsworth, London.16
