Richard A.J. (Uncle Dick to me and to you the reader from now on), also had
a tough upbringing, since his father died when he was 4 years old. He probably worse
time than my Dad who was the elder brother. He was even
more independently minded than my Dad.
Dick served in the army during the second world war, and had a more eventful
time than most. He went up and down the ranks, Private, Corporal, Sergeant, Private,
Sergeant etc. Going down was due to his fiery character getting him into hot
water. Going up was because he was the type of person you would like alongside
you in a scrap. Like most combatants in the war he very seldom spoke of his experiences,
but during the later part of his life he did tell me odd snippets.
See Prisoner of War details
After the war Dick carried on life as a carpenter, still with his outspoken
and proud character unbroken by his deprivation during the war.
