 Joseph Charles Burgar (1865-1912) - son of Alfred Burgar (1839-1917) - son of Joseph Burgar (1794-1854) - son of John Burgar (1742-1797)

Joseph Charles Burgar was born in 1865 in City of London.16 Civil Registration of Births reference is Jun 1865 V 1 p 66 - City of London16

He died in 1912 at Fulham London.16 Civil Registration of Death reference is Mar 1912 V 1a p 450. Aged 47. - Fulham London.16

In the 1871 and 1881 Census he is seen to be living with his parents.

Joseph married (in 1884) his first cousin Rachael Burgar, daughter of his uncle Walter Burgar. Civil Registration of marriage reference is Sep 1884 V 1D p 340 - St Saviour, Southwark, London.16

He was only a 19 years old at the time and their first child was born soon afterwards. It seems that they must have had to get married.

However the marriage did not last long and they were living apart by 1891, where he is seen to be back living with his parents.

 Catherine Rachel Burgar was born in 1884 in Camberwell London.16
Civil Registration of Births reference is Dec 1884 V 1d p 905 - Camberwell London16

She died in 1886 at Camberwell London.16 Civil Registration of Death reference is Jun 1886 V 1d p 468. Aged 1. - Camberwell London.16

 Henry George Burgar was born in 1886 in Wandsworth London.16 Civil Registration of Births reference is Dec 1886 V 1d p 726 - Wandsworth London16

He died in 1889 at Lambeth, London.16 Civil Registration of Death reference is Dec 1889 V 1d p 207. Aged 3. - Lambeth, London.16

It is unsure whether Henry George is a child of Joseph and Rachael. He has been placed with them on the basis of place of birth. Further work need to be carried out to prove that he is their child.

Katherine (Kathleen) Burgar.


After the break up of his marriage to Rachel, Joseph Burgar remarried In 1892 , this time to a Susannah Pimbley Mace. Civil Registration of marriage reference is Mar 1892 V 1A p 373 - Fulham London.16  

The Marriage Register of St James, Fulham267  has the entry:

Joseph Charles Burgar, aged 27, Bachelor, Labourer of 11 Breer Street, and Susannah Pimbley Mace aged 24, Spinster of 11 Breer Street were married by Banns on 27/3/1892. He signed with an X, but she signed.

Fathers: Alfred Burgar, Fishmonger and Samuel Mace (Dead), Blacksmith.

Witnesses: Alfred Tyas and Ellen Doolay, both of whom signed.

It is unlikely that he divorced Rachael, so this second marriage would have been bigamous.

Joseph and Susannah are shown together in the 1901 Census, where he was found in the index as Joseph Bargar. However, the census clearly shows that he was entered as Burgar. They did not have any children.

Susannah Pimbley Mace was born in 1863.16
She died in 1930 at Fulham London.16 Civil Registration of Death reference is Sep 1930 V 1a p 269.
