In the 1871 and 1881 Census he is seen to be living with his parents.
Joseph married (in 1884) his first cousin Rachael Burgar, daughter of his uncle Walter Burgar. Civil Registration of marriage reference is Sep 1884 V 1D p 340 - St Saviour, Southwark, London.16
He was only a 19 years old at the time and their first child was born soon afterwards. It seems that they must have had to get married.

However the marriage did not last long and they were living apart by 1891, where he is seen to be back living with his parents.

The Marriage Register of St James, Fulham267 has the entry: Joseph Charles Burgar, aged 27, Bachelor, Labourer of 11 Breer Street, and
Susannah Pimbley Mace aged 24, Spinster of 11 Breer Street were married by Banns
on 27/3/1892. He signed with an X, but she signed. Fathers: Alfred Burgar, Fishmonger and Samuel Mace (Dead), Blacksmith. Witnesses: Alfred Tyas and Ellen Doolay, both of whom signed. It is unlikely that he divorced Rachael, so this second marriage would have
been bigamous.
After the break up of his marriage to Rachel, Joseph Burgar remarried In 1892 , this time to a Susannah Pimbley Mace.

Joseph and Susannah are shown together in
the 1901 Census, where he was found in the index as Joseph Bargar. However, the
census clearly shows that he was entered as Burgar. They did not have any
children.
