Descendants of John Burgar (1742-1797)
John Wesley Burgar (1816-1878) - son of John Burgar (1787-1816) - son of John Burgar (1742-1797)
John Wesley Burgar82 was born on 27 Sep 1816 in Kingston
Jamaica.32 He was baptized
on 30 Oct 1816 in Methodist Chapel Kingston Jamaica.32
The following is a summary of the entry in the Baptism Register
John Wesley, the son of John Burgar of Kingston Jamaica in the West Indies,
and Mary his wife, daughter of John and Lydia Gough, was born at Kinston Jamaica
on the 27th September 1816 and baptised on the 30th October 1816 by J. Shipman
at the Methodist Chapel Kingston.
He died in 1878 at Coventry Warwickshire.16 Civil Registration of Death reference is Dec 1878 V
6d p 346. Aged 63. - Coventry Warwickshire.16
Between 1841 and 1858 he was a Watchmaker.82,83
John Wesley was born in Jamaica soon after the death of his father John the Methodist and
was then brought back to England.
Unfortunately, the 1841 census for where John Wesley was living has been lost
so we know we know little of him until he appears in the Watchmakers Index :
1842-1845 John W. Burgar 23 Banner Street, St Lukes, Watchmaker
1845-1847 John W. Burgar 57 Banner Street, St Lukes, Watchmaker
1850- ? John W. Burgar Birmingham Watchmaker
His mother and step-father (Andrew Wood West) were living at 24, Banner Square, next door to John Wesley Burgar in the 1842-45 period.
He also appears in the 1845 and 1847 editions of Post Office London Directory
as
John Wesley Burgar of 57 Banner Street, Watchmaker
His step-uncle, John West, was a watch maker in the 1851 Census above. It would
seem that John Wesley Burgar had learnt his trade from Uncle John West.
John
Wesley Burgar married Sarah Hudson Leather in 1844 in Aston, Warwickshire.16,25
Civil Registration of marriage reference is Mar 1844 V 16 p 246 - Aston, Warwickshire.16
The Marriage Certificate states:
John Wesley Burgar, Full age, Bachelor, Lath Manufacturer of St Lukes Middlesex
married Sarah Hudson Leather, Full age, Spinster of Camp Hill Bordesley on 20th
march 1844 at St Peter & St Paul's Church, Aston, Warwickshire. They were
married by License. The fathers were John Burgar, Dissenting Teacher and William
Leather, Gentleman. The witnesses were John Hudson Leather and Elizabeth Leather.
Thomas Farebrother was the curate who officiated at the wedding.
The witnesses were presumably Sarah's brother and sister-in-law. It would seem
that John Wesley was going up in the world by marrying a Gentleman's daughter.
A gentleman would be someone of independent means. The description of John
as a Lathe maker might imply that he made equipment used in watch manufacture.
How he came to meet his wife is not known, since she seemed to originate from
the Birmingham area, and possibly moved in different circles to him.
After the marriage, John Wesley and Sarah returned to London where he carried
on his watch making business. John Wesley and Sarah Hudson then had 2 children
in London and then a further 2 in Warwick.
See 1851 Census
NB. Various trades were carried out in the adjacent shops: at No. 117 Window
Blinds, at 118 shoemaker, at 119 weaver.
The Burgar Infant in the above census was baptised soon after as Walter Henry
Burgar. On his birth certificate, his father, John Wesley, was listed as a watchmaker.
You will have noted that John Wesley and Sarah had 4 children at this time.
They had a further child, Eleanor, in 1853.
In the Birmingham, Warwickshire Directory of 1855, John Wesley Burgar is listed as living at 42 Camp Hill, Bordesley, Warwickshire 110
After the death of his wife in 1858, John Wesley Burgar moves back to London with his two younger children.
In 1871 John Wesley Burrgar has moved again. He now appears in the Census living with his eldest daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, now Mrs Benjamin Cope. John is a watchcase maker, as is his son-in-law.
Sarah Hudson Leather was born in about 1818.
She died in 1858 at Aston, Warwickshire.16,78 Civil Registration of Death reference is Mar 1858 V 6d p 172. - Aston, Warwickshire.16 .
In her Will she left her possessions to her
husband. The letters of Administration dated 5th March 1859 state:
Burgar Sarah Hudson
Effects under £600
Re-sworn at Birmingham June 1859
under £800
The personal estate and effects of Sarah Hudson Burgar (wife of John Wesley Burgar)
late of 71 Highgate in the Parish of Aston - juxta- Birmingham in the county
of Warwick, deceased who died 1st March 1858 at Highgate aforesaid were granted
at Birmingham to the said John Wesley Burgar of 17 Ravenshurst, Aston aforesaid
watchmaker he having been first sworn.
Basically this means that her effects were valued at less than £600 but
later upgraded to £800. John Wesley inherited the proceeds.
Coincidently, in the same year Sarah's mother died. She also left a Will and divided her money between her children, including Sara Hudson (Leather) Burgar.
See Will of Sarah's mother, Sarah Leather.
John Wesley Burgar and Sarah Hudson Leather had the following children:
