John Burgar was born on 14 Sep 1842 in 11 Water Lane Fleet St, City of London.52 He was baptized on 23 Oct 1842 in St Brides, Fleet St, London.52

John, son of Joseph and Caroline Burgar, shoemaker of 11 Water Lane, was born 14/9/1842 and Baptised 23/10/1842.

He died in 1878 at St Saviour, Southwark, London.16 Civil Registration of Death reference is Dec 1878 V 1d p 110. Aged 38. - St Saviour, Southwark, London.16  The Death Certificate states:

John Burgar aged 38 years, Butcher, died of 'Bronchitis probably'. on the 22nd December 1878 at 14 Thornton Street, Walworth. The informant was E. Kingham, present at the death, of 9 Thornton Street, Walworth. The death was registered on the 25th December 1878.

The E. Kingham who was living in the same street is likely to be his mother-in-law.

John Burgar appears in the 1851 Census with his father.  In the 1861 Census he is living with his married sister, Susan Stynes.

See 1851 and 1861 Census

John Burgar and Elizabeth Ann Kingham were married on 13 Feb 1870 in St Peters, Walworth, London.16,87 The entry in the Marriage Register for St Peters Walworth states:

John Burgar, Bachelor aged 27, Butcher of Phelp Street and Elizabeth Ann Kingham, Spinster aged 24, of Phelp Street were married by Banns on the 13th February 1870 at St Peters Walworth. Both signed the Register. John's father was recorded as Alfred Burgar, Shoemaker, Deceased, and Elizabeth's father as William Kingham, Butcher. Witnesses William Kingham and William Symonds.

John seems to have mixed up the name of his father ( Joseph) with that of his brother Alfred. (His sister Caroline was equally confused since she thought her father's name was Walter). Probably if you call a person 'Dad' you might not know his first name, especially if he dies when you are young.

However, the Civil Registration Marriage Certificate is somewhat different: Civil Registration of marriage reference is Mar 1870 V 1D p 151 - St Saviour, Southwark, London.16

John Burgar, Bachelor aged 27, Butcher of Phelp Street and Elizabeth Ann Kingham, Spinster aged 24, of Phelp Street were married on the 13th February 1870 at St Peters Walworth. Both signed the Register. John's father was recorded as Alfred Burgar, Shoemaker, Deceased, and Elizabeth's father as William Kingham, Butcher, deceased. Witnesses Elizabeth Suffield Kingham and William Symonds.

This entry is similar to the above Parish register entry,  except that one of the witnesses was her mother, Elizabeth Suffield Kingham, not her father, William Kingham, who was deceased.

They appear in the 1871 Census as newly weds with a daughter

See 1871 Census

At this time, John's mother-in-law was living with one of her married daughters (Jessey (Kingham) Fisher.

See 1871 Census for Elizabeth Suffield Kingham

Elizabeth Ann Kingham (daughter of William and Elizabeth Suffield Kingham) was born in 1846.87 Civil Registration of Births reference is Mar 1846, V 4, p308 - Lambeth, London16

Elizabeth Ann Kingham Burgar, has not been found in the 1881 Census records after John's death. We have no further information on any subsequent marriages or of her death. It is unclear whether she died in the 1870s. or that she found a partner, and deserted her daughter.

However, her daughter, Elizabeth Lucy Burgar is living with her grandmother, Elizabeth Kingham in 1881.
