Alfred Benjamin Burgar married Sophia Elizabeth (Yelph) Cope in 1871. Civil Registration of marriage reference is Mar 1871 V 1C p 339 - Bethnal Green,
London.16,25
The Marriage Certificate for the marriage has the following information.
Alfred Benjamin Burgar, aged 20, Bachelor, Carman, of Cambridge Road
and Sophia Elizabeth Cope, aged 28, Widow Cambridge Road, were married on the
6th February 1871 at St Bartolomew's Church, Bethnal Green. Both signed the
Certificate. Alfred Benjamin's father was given as John Wesley Burgar, a Watchmaker
and Sophia's father as Henry Yelph, a Traveller. The witnesses were William
Beckett and Sarah Ann Beckett.
Sophia Elizabeth Cope was born a Yelph. Elizabeth Yelf. was one of the witnesses
at Alfred Benjamin's grandmother's, Mary (Gough) Burgar, marriage to Andrew Wood
West. This suggests that Sophia and Alfred may have known each other as youngsters
through the friendship of their families.
The witnesses were William Becket and Sarah Ann Becket. In the 1881 census these
are seen to be Publicans in Bethnal Green.
We have not found any trace of Alfred Benjamin or Sophia having children or dying
in the UK. We have not been able to locate them in the 1871 or 1881 Census returns.
It is possible that they emigrated.
Sophia Elizabeth Yelph (daughter of Henry Yelph)
was born in 1843.25
On the marriage to Alfred Benjamin Burgar, it is stated that Sophia's father
is Henry Yelph and that she is a widow. Her married name was Cope. However,
on checking the civil registration for marriages from 1858 to 1870 for Sophia Yelf or Yelph
there is no mention of a marriage.
Similarly, on checking the births from 1839-1845, there is no record of Sophia
Yelf/Yelph.
(December 1840 was missing).
The name Yelph was not found in any records (IGI, Civil registration, 1881 census).
Yelf was commonly found in the Hampshire & Wiltshire area. However, there
was a Henry Yelf born 1843, Ernest 1844, and Sarah Jane 1842 in the London Area.
It is possible that Alfred Benjamin died pre 1881 and Sopia remarried. We have
not found a remarriage under the Burgar surname.
