This is me, the author of this story. I had the good fortune to be a war time child. Although there were no luxuries
at the time, the subsequent changes after the war led to health care and a better
chance of education for the working class. I thus had the good luck to go to
a Grammar School and then to University. I think I must have been the first
Burgar in England to have had such a wide education.
For most of my working life I have been a lecturer teaching Polymer Science and Technology
at the University of North London. Polymers comprise rubbers and plastics.
Latterly, I have been a one man computing business, not very successful, but
enjoyable.
I have been lucky, being the first generation from working class roots,
to have been able to develop working class skills, woodworking, plumbing, bricklaying
etc. Thus I've been able to use my 'brains' and hands, which has given me a happy
life.
Alice Rockwell (born 27th September 1937) and I had been at school together. On the 6 July 1960 we
were married at the Registry Office in Uxbridge, Middlesex.
Civil Registration of marriage reference is Sep 1960 V 5F p 462 - Uxbridge,
Middlesex.16
Without doubt this was the best thing that I have done in my life
Alice has spent most of her working life as a social worker, mainly helping young teenage children, many of them in very unhappy circumstances.
